Endpapers

What are printed endpapers?

Endpapers are structural components of all hardcover books—they hold the bound book block to the cover.

This is essentially the first and last spread of a hardcover book. All of our hardcover books come with unprinted endpapers at no additional cost. Four colors are available: white, black, natural and gray.

Printed endpapers are an option available at additional cost, allowing you to print your custom design on one side (4/0) or both sides (4/4) of the endpapers.

See the Prepare Your Files page on our website for guidance on how to prepare your printed endpaper files.

What are endpapers?

Endpapers are essential components found in all hardcover books as they secure the book block to the cover.

One side of the sheet is glued to the inner book cover, while the other side is bound to the book contents.

We provide unprinted endpapers for all our hardcover books at no extra charge. These unprinted endpapers are available in four colors: white, black, natural, and gray. However, if you prefer, you can opt for printed endpapers with a design of your choice.

When it comes to printed endpapers, you have two options:

  • 4/0 printing: Endpapers printed 4/0 have printing on one side
  • 4/4 printed: Endpapers printed 4/4 have printing on both sides

Remember to provide a separate PDF specifically for the endpaper design.

It's important to note that choosing printed endpapers will increase the cost per book.

Can I supply my own endpapers?

We typically use our stock interior papers for printing. However, we are open to considering the use of your own paper on a case-by-case basis.

Please note that if you choose to supply your own paper, we may need to conduct test print runs to ensure optimal results. This additional step may extend the overall turnaround time of your order.

It's important to keep this in mind, especially if your project has a strict deadline.

Please contact us if you would like to explore using your own paper.

The size of your printed endpaper layout should be your book height by twice your book width. Include 0.25" of bleed on all sides.

Example: If your page trim size is 8.5" wide by 11" high, your endpaper will be 17" wide by 11" high. Including the bleed, the overall size will be 17.5" wide by 11.5" high.

For each duplex endpaper (printing on both sides, 4/4), your layout should include two pages: one with art across the whole spread, and another with images on only half the spread.

This is because one of the panels of each endpaper will be glued to the hardcover case. The half that should be left blank differs between the front and back end papers.

See the diagrams on our website for reference. If your endpaper design is identical in the front and back of your book, you can submit a single-page endpaper PDF.

If the front and back endpapers will have different designs, please submit a separate PDF for each, labeled accordingly.

Can I print on one side/both sides of my endpapers?

If you select printed endpapers for your hardcover book project, you can choose to print on one side of the endpaper (4/0) or both sides (4/4).

See the Prepare Your Files page on our website for guidance on how to prepare your endpaper files.
